Dipal Chandra Barua

Dipal Chandra Barua is a pioneering social entrepreneur and renewable energy leader from Bangladesh, best known as the Co-Founder and former Deputy Managing Director of Grameen Bank and the Founding Managing Director of Grameen Shakti. As the Founder and Chairman of Bright Green Energy Foundation (BGEF), he has championed solar energy expansion in rural Bangladesh, developing innovative financial models that enabled the installation of over 6.5 million Solar Home Systems—the world’s largest program of its kind. His visionary work has earned him global recognition, including the First Zayed Future Energy Prize in 2009, the Right Livelihood Award in 2007, and numerous other international honors. Mr. Barua has served in key advisory and leadership roles, including Councillor of the World Future Council, Chief Adviser and former President of the Bangladesh Solar & Renewable Energy Association (BSREA), Council Member of the Bangladesh Energy Society (BES), Ambassador of the Global 100% RE Campaign, and former member of the Private Sector Advisory Group of the Green Climate Fund. With decades of experience in pro-poor energy solutions, international advocacy, and policy development, he continues to pursue his vision of transforming Bangladesh into the world’s first “Solar Nation” by 2050, bringing renewable energy to 75 million people and inspiring global change.

First Zayed Sustainability Prize 2009

For his innovation and commitment to alternative energy Mr. Barua awarded the First Zayed Sustainability Prize 2009 from Abu Dhabi, UAE as the first winner of the Prize since its introduction by Abu Dhabi Government, UAE. He has set up a Scholarship Fund with his Zayed Future Energy Prize award money to expand and create 100,000 Green Energy Women Entrepreneurs by 2020.

Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy 2006

From London, UK on June 15, 2006. This was one of the most prestigious awards received by Dipal C. Barua from Lord May of Oxford at Royal Geographical Society, London. HRH Prince Charles is the sponsor of the Ashden Awards.

The Gandhi Peace Prize Award-2000

Received “The Gandhi Peace Prize Award-2000” from H.E. Honorable President, Republic of India, Mr. R.K. Narayanan on March 16, 2001, New Delhi, India on behalf of Grameen Bank.

Mr. Barua is actively involved in research and publication to develop and disseminate best practices in the international arena. He is the author of the book titled “The Poor Always Pay Back”, published from Kumarian Press, USA, which explains and analyzes the development of Grameen Bank from a Classic to Generalized System.
